The Local and Regional Economic Development Handbook, launched on 27 April, contains a wealth of practical case studies and examples that span the globe.

𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆’𝘀 approach to local and regional economic development (LRED) provides vital insights into balancing structural regional convergence with ambitious environmental transformations. Highlights of case studies in the handbook include:

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘑𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵 𝘍𝘦𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘢𝘭/𝘓𝘢̈𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘛𝘢𝘴𝘬 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘙𝘦𝘨𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘌𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘰𝘮𝘪𝘤 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴 (𝘎𝘙𝘞) is a joint federal and state task that pools resources to modernise infrastructure and private business investments in structurally weak areas, particularly within eastern Germany post-reunification. It is a prime example of a cooperative, multi-level public finance framework designed to systematically tackle regional inequalities and stimulate structural adjustments.

𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘣𝘶𝘳𝘨’𝘴 𝘝𝘢𝘶𝘣𝘢𝘯 𝘕𝘦𝘪𝘨𝘩𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘥 is highlighted as a long-standing model of sustainable urban planning that seamlessly integrates passive solar design, combined heat and power systems, and green transport priorities. The initiative proves that master-planned residential areas can drastically reduce environmental impact while remaining highly desirable places to live. This case study demonstrates how human-centred urban design and real estate regeneration can actively contribute to net zero targets.
